Pronunciation

Phonemic awareness activity: pupils recite the lyrics syllabically by clapping each syllable. Next, the pupils count how many syllables the specific words have e.g. βε-ντά-λια (ve-nta-lia, fan), κιά-λια (kia-lia, binoculars), κυ-ρί-α (ky-ri-a, lady), Χο-νο-λου-λού (Cho-no-lou-lou, Honolulu), κα-ρα-μέ-λες (ka-ra-me-les, candies) etc.
Articulation of “χα-χα-χα” (cha-cha-cha) in various theatrical ways e.g. with pomposity, arrogance, happiness, anger, etc.

Speech Comprehension and Production

Find the rhyme in the lyrics of the song e.g. τρία-κυρία (tria-kyria, three-lady), βεντάλια-κιάλια (ventalia-kialia, fan-binoculars).
Discuss the comic-surreal elements of the song: “η κυρία παίζει μια βεντάλια και κοιτάει με κιάλια...στη Χονολουλού” (ē kyria paizei mia ventalia kai koitaei me kialia…stē Chonoloulou), “να μετρήσει φύκια και μικρά χαλίκια” (na metrēsei phykia kai mikra chalikia), etc.
Quotation of poems by Eugenios Trivizas that contain similar surreal elements: “Ο Άρης στο φεγγάρι” (O Arēs sto phengari), “Το κανίς με το κανό” (to kanis me to kano), “Το φιρίκι” (to phiriki) etc.
Transform the poem into prose and make a dramatic presentation in class.
Identify and process the meaning of the expression “να μετρήσει ψείρες στη φακή” (na metrēsei pseires stē phakē, to count lice on the lentil), equivalent to the phrase “ψύλλος στα άχυρα” (psyllos sta achyra, flea in the haystack), which means that someone tries to do something impossible.

Music Activities

Sing while using hands in order to show pitch changes (solfége on air indicating the changes of the pitch following the rhythm). A song in three tones (G, E, A) which reminds of the traditional singing games and the counting-out rhymes (three tones, characteristic of children’s songs).
Perform the song as a counting-out rhyme (which ends in the choice of the word "mother").
Perform the song on pitched percussion instruments (e.g. melodic tube drums, tuned bells, glockenspiels, sound tubes etc.). Divide the class into three groups with each group corresponding to one note (practice group coordination and render phrase group).
