Speech Comprehension and Production

Discuss the social and political situation of Greece as presented in the lyrics of the song. Discussion on how the metaphorical expressions are used to describe contemporary Greek people through characteristic and symbolic elements of shadow theater: “το καταραμένο φίδι να το δω δεν με τρομάζει” (to katarameno phidi na to dō den me tromazei) (vigor, pride), “το θηρίο θα με φάει, κλάψε με με φεγγαράδα να το μάθει όλη η Ελλάδα” (to thērio tha me phaei, klapse me me phengarada na to mathei olē ē Ellada) (mocking of danger and difficulties, surreal self-promotion even at the most difficult moment), “όλη η Ελλάδα που χορεύει στη λιακάδα” (olē ē Ellada pou chorevei stē liakada, unsuspecting mood of having fun, ignorance of danger), “η αλήθεια είναι μία, κάτω από την παρανομία η υπόθεση έχει βάθος” (ē alētheia einai mia, katō apo tēn paranomia ē ypothesē echei vathos, the depth of corruption, how the truth is hidden under repeated lies , entanglement), “δεν δέχεται κανένας στην καμπούρα του το λάθος” (den dexetai kanenas stēn kampoura tou to lathos, denial of responsibilities, lack of self-criticism), “μια καραγκιοζοπαρέα... τσακώθηκαν στις φιγούρες και σκόρπισανε σα σβούρες” (mia karankiozoparea…tsakōthēkan stis figures kai skorpisane sa svoures, lack of cooperative mood and teamwork, lack of self-control and patience, fighting for an insignificant reason), “άδαρτος ποτέ δεν κλαίω” (adartos pote den klaiō, mental toughness), “μου άναψαν τα λαμπάκια και η πλατεία φωτισμένη μου βαράει παλαμάκια” (mou anapsan ta lampakia kai ē plateia fōtismenē mou varaei palamakia, fun, liveliness, self-promotion mood, team spirit). Folk expressions associated with the theater of shadows: “όπα είπα όπα λέω” (opa eipa opa leō), “το καταραμένο φίδι” (to katarameno phidi), ο ντελάλης (τελάλης) [o delalēs (telalēs, town crier), “σκόρπισαν σα σβούρες” (skorpisan sa svoures), η καμπούρα (ē kampoura, the hump), οι φιγούρες (oi phigoures, the figures).
Τhe pattern of double metaphors in each verse as a surreal element denoting reversals, e.g. “κλάψε με με φεγγαράδα να το μάθει όλη η Ελλάδα, που χορεύει στην λιακάδα” (klapse me phengarada na to mathei olē ē Ellada, pou choreuei stēn liakada”.

Music Activities

The melody is based on the musical theme of Karankiozē that can be found in the Greek shadow theater. Discussion on how musical patterns have the role of identifiers of style, characters, story, or content of each work (e.g. the musical themes of news, movies, production companies, television series).
What is the role of music in shadow theater? The music foreshadows the kind of the work and the plot of the story. Each character has a characteristic musical theme that is mainly related to its origin.
Learn the song and perform it on melodic instruments.
Based on the introduction of Karankiozēs, the pupils are asked to create ostinati, variations of the theme and to be responsible for the instrumentation of the work using Orff instrumentation techniques.
Pupils divided into groups compose new lyrics on the original melody of the song, based on the pattern of lyrics of the double metaphors followed by the creator.
